Mathematics and Indigenous Perspectives
Mathematics and Indigenous Perspectives
There are many connections between Indigenous ways of knowing and our mathematics curriculum. These connections however, need to be made throughout the year as opposed to periodically doing an activity. Many of these connections can only begin once we know our learners. Some of the documents listed on this page are about the importance of being culturally aware and responsive; which is an excellent place to start. Other documents are about the importance of understanding how visual/spatial learners think about mathematics. Finally, there are some lesson ideas for specific cultural pieces, like beading, which can be a part of your discussions about how Indigenous People used mathematics in their lives.
This is not a complete list but perhaps, the beginning of a conversation about how we can infuse Indigenous perspectives into the math curriculum.
