Summer School Learning Opportunities
The NNDSB is pleased to offer students across our district and beyond a number of opportunities for summer learning. Our registrations for high school credit courses will occur through the provincial PRISM system. All courses in this document are subject to sufficient staffing and enrolment to run.
- NNDSB students, please see your Guidance Counsellor in Student Services to register.
- Non-NNDSB students please see your Guidance Counsellor to register. We are using the PRISM system for all registration.
- International Students, course fees are $700 per 110 hr. full credit course and $350 for 55 hr. half credit course.
- Please contact our summer school secretary Terri Reidt 705.472.5419 x. 5991.
- Attendance is MANDATORY for all courses. Lack of attendance will result in removal from course.
- eLearning students will receive a welcome email from their teacher to their registered email address.
- eLearning students will need access to a device and reliable internet to connect to course content.

Additional Virtual Summer Learning Opportunities
The Near North District School Board is offering a reach ahead opportunity to current NNDSB grade 8 students to receive a high school credit prior to beginning high school. This course focuses on learning strategies to help students become more successful, more independent learners. Students will learn to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal managements skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. The course helps students build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond. A GLS1OS or GLE1OS credit will be granted upon successful completion of the credit. Contact your school’s guidance office for details.
Additional In-Person Summer Learning Opportunities
Students working to complete the experiential learning requirements for their SHSM certificate and those students requiring coop credit(s) to graduate will be given priority. Approved placements will be in-person. Please register with your guidance counsellor. One & two credits available for the GWL3O coop course.

Hosted at West Ferris from 9am-12pm, students will gain an understanding of creating various baked meals and goods. Students will learn the tools and techniques required to create baked deserts and entrees, both sweet and savory. Students will engage in hands on learning daily and will have the opportunity to eat many of their creations. They will learn about proper safe food handling and tool manipulation. There will also be an online asynchronous portion of the course for some of the theoretical portion of the course. TFB3E credit will be granted upon successful completion of the course. After a short hiatus, TOROS is back in full swing in the NNDSB. All parts of the program will be hosted at West Ferris Secondary School. Students from grade 8-12 will be able to participate in creating a high-quality production of “Back to the 80’s – The Totally Awesome Musical” and earn a high school credit while doing it. The program will run July 4th – Aug 13th (most days 9am-1pm with increasing hours closer to the shows). Other important dates are information night (May 18th, 6pm-8pm), auditions (May 23-25, 6pm-8pm) and shows (Aug 10-13). There are many opportunities available including performers, stage crew, sound and lighting positions, costume/set/prop creation crew, etc. Students will get hands on experience throughout this intensive program.

This year the NNDSB will be hosting a new opportunity as an individual sport skills-based credit open to grades 8-12 students across the North Bay area. Athletes will train daily at West Ferris Secondary School from 9am-12pm from July 4th-28th, gaining practical skills and game play experience throughout this intensive program. There will also be an online asynchronous portion of the course focusing on healthy and active living. This focused course on basketball will no doubt improve each athlete’s basketball skills. PAL1O, 2O, 3O, or 4O credit will be granted upon successful completion of the course. Contact your school’s guidance office for details.

Athletes will train daily at Chippewa Secondary School from 9am-12pm from July 4th-28th, gaining practical skills, game play experience and sport leadership opportunities throughout this intensive program. There will also be an online asynchronous portion of the course focusing on healthy and active living. This focused course on volleyball will no doubt improve each athlete’s volleyball skills. A PAL1O, 2O, 3O, or 4O credit will be granted upon successful completion of the course. Contact your school’s guidance office for details.

Want to learn how to: Fly drones, code, create robotics, solve real world problems? On location at West Ferris Secondary School, students in grades 7-10 this school year are eligible to be a part of the second year of our STEM Camp. For three weeks in the mornings, students will get hands on experience with STEM education while learning foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Principal recommendation required to participate. Mornings 9am-12pm, running July 4-21 at West Ferris S.S. Contact your school’s office or Guidance for details.
