Labour Updates for Families

Information for families during labour disruptions

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has given five-day notice of a full strike of its members effective Monday, Nov. 21, 2022. At Near North District School Board (NNDSB), CUPE represents school secretaries, custodial and maintenance staff, IT technicians, library technicians, as well as some finance and board support staff.
NNDSB has determined it is unable to meet the health and safety requirements for all students while the services of CUPE members are withdrawn.
If the negotiation is not settled prior to Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, all NNDSB schools will be closed to in-person learning as of Monday, Nov. 21, 2022.
Community use of school permits will be suspended as of Monday, Nov. 21, 2022 until further notice. NNDSB does not have the capacity to maintain safe conditions for permit holders.

There are actions parents, guardians and students can take that may help minimize disruptions to learning in the event of a cohort, school, or system closure. For example:

  • Students should frequently access online learning platforms (Edsby, LMS, Office 365) to connect with their teacher and access learning resources
  • Families who are not able to access learning using technology should contact the school office and arrange alternative opportunities to access learning materials/packages
  • Reach out to the school if communication is not being received
  • Regularly communicate with their teacher (Microsoft Teams, e-mail, phone etc.)
  • Contact the family help desk number if unable to login – 705-472-5169 (North Bay), 705-773-7975 (Parry Sound)
  • Access the Passport to learning page for resources to support learning remotely
  • Review the tips for @home Learning

We will endeavour to update information in a timely manner, recognizing that the current labour environment changes quickly and frequently.
