2.1: DreamBox Learning overview for new users 

The board has now purchased licenses for all K-6/8 students in the NNDSB.  DBL allows students to engage in lessons that are adapted to their learning needs and allows teachers the opportunity to access real-time data and assign specific lessons to students, which will be particularly useful for the duration of home learning.  This session will be geared towards teachers who are new to DreamBox Learning or would like a refresher on the teacher dashboard.

3.3: Support for non-virtual learners

With an expansive geographic region and many rural communities, the NNDSB would like to offer some support for teachers designing lessons/learning activities through a non-virtual platform. 4.1: Mathology Little Books and Mathology.ca for K-3 

Mathology is a resource by Pearson that includes a series of “Math First” readers for K-3 students.  Our board has purchased this for all kindergarten classes in the NNDSB and a pilot group of 5 schools for grades 1-3.  With the current situation, Pearson has made the resources freely available to educators, including digital Mathology readers along with digital and home tasks.  This session will familiarize K-3 educators with this resource and will allow for discussion on how to best leverage it for home learning.

1.1: Games for Learning 

(Only offered during session 1) 

 

Swim with the fish in Aquaverse, get down and dirty with Roots, and click your way to environmental awareness on Sprite’s Quest. These highly engaging, interactive learning games are all available as courses in the LMS. This session will include hands-on play with Aquaverse, Roots, The Lost Feathers and Seedling Saga, and eMe, as well as an in-depth look at the built-in teaching and assessment resources. Please bring a laptop or an iPad.

​1.3: Bee-Bots 

 

Bee-bot is a programmable robot that helps teach children the first stages of programming, sequencing, estimation and problem-solving. Captivate your students interest through multiple fun cross-curricular activities in the classroom with this easy to use robot. Suitable for grades K and up.

In this session we will look at the progression of students from computer-based programming (e.g - code.org) to hands on programming of Sphero's.

1.5: The Coding Corner 

 

This “Coding Corner” session will explore coding in the primary grades, including kindergarten, providing ample opportunity for hands-on learning. 

During this session, we will look at how to incorporate coding into our Primary grades and more specifically, our Kindergarten classrooms.  What does it look like? How does it work? What types of “unplugged” activities are there for younger students? 

Together, we will focus on a program called Scratch Jr., a coding program designed specifically for students aged 5-7.  This program allows primary students opportunity to create simple programs such as stories, games and animations in a more simpler coding learning environment. 

We will also look at both Language Arts and Mathematics curriculum connections.

1.6: LMS – Getting Started 

 

Are you interesting in learning to use the LMS? Maybe you have started out using some of the tools, but want to learn more about content, dropboxes, quizzes, and other tools? This session will provide you with the skills needed to begin using the LMS in a blended learning environment to support student learning.

This session is about learning how the blogging tools are used in the classroom, from both the student and teacher perspective; student blogs and teacher website. The session is also about seeing how to use Microsoft OneNote as an online assessment tool and mark book. These are great ways to have all important documentation all in one place, backed up and automatically saved. They are easy to access, organize and are user friendly.

Coding is an essential skill that teaches problem-solving, develops teamwork, and inspires creativity. Join guest presenter Jason Wood, an Apple Distinguished Educator from Richmond Hill, to learn how you can engage elementary and middle school students in the world of coding on iPad with visual-based apps, Swift Playgrounds, and Everyone Can Code resources designed for teachers.

2.2: Hands-on with Scratch Coding 

(Only offered during session 2) 

  Coding is the 'literacy' of the 21st century. Participants will learn to code with Scratch, and create several animations linked to curriculum expectations. Take these project ideas and your new skills straight back to your class and start your students on their journey as creators, not just consumers of technology. Learning resources will be explored, and a sample Unit Plan will be provided.

Ready to customize your course shell or use new tools to document student learning, assess student work, and improve communication? This session will provide you with the skills to leverage new and existing LMS tools to help both you and your students.      
3.6: Breakout.edu      Learn about a resource we have access to in the Near North Board called breakout.edu. Help your students design and play escape rooms where they use critical thinking and group work skills.
