Community Remembrance Project 2018

May 1, 2018 By Scott

May 1, 2018

Parry Sound High School announced today that it is reviving the Community Remembrance Project for 2018 in response to popular demand to honour more local veterans on street banners.

In 2017, as part of the school’s trip to the Vimy 100 commemoration in France, PSHS established a program to allow community members to sponsor street banners that would honour local veterans and be put up every fall in downtown Parry Sound. The response was overwhelming. 118 veterans were commemorated on 59 banners that went up in October and November of last year.

The program was a partnership between the high school, the Town of Parry Sound, the Downtown Business Association, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 117, and the Museum on Tower Hill.

Since the banners went up last fall, requests for another chance to order them have been non-stop. Before the program could be revived, funding to purchase and install more banner arms had to be secured. Thanks to the Town of Parry Sound and the Downtown Business Association, an additional 35 banner arms can be purchased, allowing us to accept orders for up to 70 additional veterans to be honoured on one side of a banner.

The new banners will be ready to go up in Parry Sound, along with last year’s banners, from Thanksgiving weekend to Nov. 15th of this year.

Orders will be accepted at the Town of Parry Sound Office from May 14th to June 15th, on weekdays during regular business hours.

The order form is available on the Parry Sound High School website, the Town of Parry Sound website, and the Museum on Tower Hill website. Paper copies of the form can be picked up at the PSHS office or the Town Office.

Movement of Students For September 2018

April 2, 2018 By Scott

Near North District School Board would like to thank our staff and parents most sincerely for allowing us the time to work in a focused and authentic way with all students and families anticipated to move to West Ferris for the south school French program as outlined in our original plan for our North Bay high school consolidation.

The Board finalized data collection, as of last Friday, indicates that it will be best for our current grade 9, 10, and 11 students enrolled at Chippewa to stay at Chippewa to finish their careers in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Current grade 6, 7, and 8 Extended French and French Immersion students zoned for West Ferris will move to West Ferris as planned for grades 7, 8 and 9.

We believe this is in our students' best interest with respect to efficient delivery of programs between both schools.  We also feel this decision honours our students’ voice through the evidence gathered in their course selections through Career Cruising.

Once again the Board is thankful to staff, parents and students for allowing us this time to work with the data so we could be sure of where it was best to offer strong courses as we continue to grow the south school program.
