Military Family Transition Support

We're here to support your family's transition

Welcome to the Near North District School Board. We understand that military families experience unique transitions, and we're committed to helping your child settle into their new school smoothly.

Explore the sections below to learn more about getting started, special education supports, records and consent, and settling into your new school community.

GETTING STARTED

Find your child's school

If you're new to the Near North District School Board, start by using our School Locator to find the school that serves your home address.

FIND YOUR SCHOOL

Connect with your school

Once you've found your school, reach out to the school office or principal to begin the registration process and ask any questions about your child's transition.

FIND SCHOOL CONTACT INFORMATION

Your child's school is your first point of contact and can connect you with the appropriate supports and resources.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORT

If your child receives special education support, sharing information early can help us prepare.

If available, please share documentation that can help us understand your child's learning needs and current supports, such as:

  • Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Assessment reports
  • Information about current supports
  • Accommodation information

Providing this information early can help us plan appropriate services and reduce delays in accessing supports.

Our District Learning Resource Teachers (DLRTs) and Special Education Department are available to support transition planning and special education programming.

RECORDS & CONSENT

Your child's information is important — and so is their privacy.

When registering, please bring any relevant educational records and reports you have available. These can help our team better understand your child's needs and plan for their integration.

If we need to connect with your child's previous school, practitioner or another service provider, we'll ask you to complete a Consent to Exchange Information form before reaching out directly.

This consent allows us to communicate with the appropriate people while respecting your family's privacy.

SCHOOL LIFE & COMMUNITY

Settling into a new school is about more than the classroom.

We want your child to feel welcomed, supported and comfortable in their new school community. Every transition is different, and our goal is to work with your family to help your child settle in and feel connected. If you have questions or concerns about your child's integration, please reach out to their school. We're here to help!

WHO CAN HELP?

School Principal: Your first point of contact for registration and school-based supports.

District Learning Resource Teacher (DLRT): Supports transition planning and special education programming.

Special Education Department: Assists with specialized services, resources, and questions about supports.

HAVE QUESTIONS?

We're here to support your family through this transition. If you have questions about your child's integration or special education supports, please don't hesitate to reach out.
