Adult Non-Credit English as a Second Language Training Program.
Funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) –(in person/on-line, part-time/full-time, adults 18+, non-credit bearing)
The Near North District School Board’s Adult Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL) Training program is a FREE program for eligible learners. Eligible learners must be an immigrant who is a resident of Ontario, is of legal school leaving age, and is:
– a naturalized Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a Convention refugee or a refugee claimant; or
– approved as a permanent resident, or their dependent, but who has not yet been processed to receive permanent resident status (e.g., individuals approved under the Ontario Immigrant Provincial Nominee program or the Canadian Experience Class); or
– admitted under a federal caregiver program with a pathway to permanent residency.
Adult learners may register and begin day classes at any time during the school year (September – June) and classes are delivered by an ESL qualified and certified teacher.
This is a flexible program with curriculum designed to meet the needs of each learner whether at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level (CLB Literacy – CLB 5+). Lessons are created using the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and ongoing language assessment tasks are given using Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) approach. Provincial ESL certificates are given to learners upon completion of benchmark advancement.
The personal and experiential approach to education, combined with a balance of academics, social skills, practical workplace training and networking, Canadian culture and language development, and community events and activities, will prepare the learner for future academic studies, employment and living in Canada.
We would be happy to arrange a visit to our ESL classroom and answer any questions about the Adult ESL Program. Come and say hello!
