New Information for Spartan Families

August 26, 2020 By Alison

Afternoon Spartan Families,

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as I am your new Principal, Mrs. Herst.

Last year, I was the principal of Widdifield Secondary School and I am excited to now be with you at Silver Birches! There is another change at the school and it is a new vice-principal, Mr. Meighan. Together, with the incredible staff at Silver Birches we are eager to have our school filled with students again.

I am sure you have many questions for the upcoming school year.  I will be sending several emails over the next two weeks to address the new protocols you will see in the school, classrooms as well as the playground.

We will also be updating our school website and EDSBY, so check those areas for new messaging.

What can you be thinking of now?

-Grades 4-6 must wear a mask, please have your child begin to get used to wearing one

-All students need to bring a labelled water bottle

-Belongings from home will be limited to avoid any sharing of materials

AT-HOME LEARNING

At-Home Learning in the Elementary Panel will be supported centrally.   The families that have completed the survey (registration) regarding the intent to not have their child/children return to school will be contacted centrally.  This communication will provide a description of the choices for Remote Learning e.g. Synchronized Learning (225 min of real-time connectivity with 300 minutes supported by a teacher) or Asynchronous Learning (to enable a daily schedule or timetable including 300 minutes of learning opportunities, which may involve students watching pre-recorded video lessons, completing assigned tasks, contributing to online discussion boards. In circumstances where there is no internet connectivity, home learning packages may be provided.)  Parents/guardians will be expected to select one of the two choices and then be contacted centrally by the teacher assigned to support the learning during the first week of school.

A reach out to school administrators may be required through the process of support in communicating and connecting with families.  In addition, communication will take place to keep the school informed of the program the students enrolled at their schools are committed to.  School administrators will be asked to support the remote learning instructor regarding student-specific issues or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs Herst

Principal Silver Birches
