Greetings Silver Birches Families!
I know many of our teachers have reached out to their families already, but I wanted to touch base personally and give a few updates that might be relevant for you and/or your children.
We are still uncertain as to the length of the school closure. The Minister of Education had already announced a two-week closure until April 5th, but has also indicated that this time-frame will be extended. Please be sure to check out the Near North District School Board website for all important updates: www.nearnorthschools.ca
School buildings are off-limits at this time, and the board office is also closed. Should you need assistance with any office-related issues, please feel free to contact myself (Kim.Pauli@nearnorthschools.ca) or Arlene (secretary at Arlene.Kielly@nearnorthschools.ca) by email.
Please refer to the resources on the NNDSB website for learning opportunities for your child. The Ministry of Education has a “Learn at Home” platform available to enhance student learning at home. Today, the NNDSB launched the NEW Near North Passport to Learning webpage which offers a variety of resources and tools that cover a range of grades and subjects that may be helpful for students and parents during this time: https://www.nearnorthschools.ca/learning-at-home/
Following this two week time-frame, the Ministry will decide on a plan that will allow our Silver Birches teachers to ensure continuity of learning for your child. Once those plans are finalized and shared with us, they will be in touch!
We recognize that many families are struggling and may require assistance at this time. The daily “Breakfast Program” at Silver Birches is supported by Community Living North Bay. They are offering food to children, youth and their families beginning Monday March 30th, 2020. This agency wants to ensure that they are meeting the needs of the community during this difficult uncertain time, as schools are closed and children and youth are still hungry. With the collaboration of generous funders, many partners and the Ministry funding, they have agreed to act quickly to get food or vouchers out to the children and youth in our community. The agency will be following all regulations as set out by our Public Health Unit which includes safe social distancing. There are 2 hubs set up in North Bay for families to pick up breakfast items. Please see the letter (attached here: Student Nutrition Program Update.docx ) for locations and the guidelines to take advantage of this program should you find the need.
Please know we are all missing our students and families, and are thinking of you all during these uncertain times. We hope to see you all again soon, but encourage you to stay safe and well in the meantime.
Mrs. Kim Pauli (Principal) and Your Silver Birches Staff
