Vice-Principal Receives Outstanding Contribution Award for Physical Education and Health
 
The Near North District School Board is pleased to announce that Karin Podlatis-Brown, Vice-Principal at Northern Secondary School, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Contribution Award for Physical Education and Health.  This award, presented by the Ontario Physical Health and Education Association (OPHEA), recognizes teachers in the province who display extraordinary devotion to physical education and health. On Friday, October 14, Karin travelled to the OPHEA Conference Awards Dinner in Alliston, where she was presented with this prestigious award.
 
Karin taught Physical and Health Education at the secondary level for 14 years before moving into a coordinator’s role for the Near North District School Board. She moved several initiatives forward to support quality Health and Physical Education as well as Healthy Schools. Karin supported the implementation of Daily Physical Education (DPA) and working with the Board’s food service provider to create healthier cafeterias in Near North secondary schools.  Karin has been involved at the Ministry of Education level with the revisions to the elementary and secondary Health and Physical Education curriculum. Karin’s most recent endeavor related to Healthy Schools includes the Ministry of Education mandated School Food and Beverage policy.
 
“Karin is most deserving of this distinguished award.  I know that the students, staff and parents of the Board join OPHEA in recognizing the leadership and dedication Karin has demonstrated,” said Terry Blair, Student Success Lead / Superintendent of Schools. 
 
In May of this year, Karin was also recognized for her commitment to physical and health education when she was named as the co-winner of an advocacy award presented with the he Ontario Association for the Supervision of Physical and Health Education (OASPHE).  The Near North District School Board is grateful to have Karin and colleagues like her in its employ.
